Thanksgiving Day Tips: How to Care for Yourself When Triggers Arise.

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with loved ones, celebrate gratitude, and enjoy a delicious meal. However, it can also bring together people with vastly different viewpoints, which may lead to tensions or disagreements. Here are some tips on how to handle these potential triggers and keep the holiday festive and harmonious.

  1. Practice Empathy and Active Listening
When differences arise, practice empathy. Try to understand where the other person is coming from. Active listening—really hearing what the other person is saying without immediately formulating a response—can go a long way in defusing tension.
  2. Set Boundaries Early
Before the gathering, set clear boundaries with yourself and others. Decide which topics are off-limits, such as politics or religion, and communicate these boundaries to your family and friends if needed. It’s perfectly okay to say, “Let’s focus on what we’re thankful for and save this discussion for another time.”
  3. Stay Calm and Respectful
If a conversation starts to heat up, take a deep breath and stay calm. Keeping your tone respectful and avoiding personal attacks helps maintain a constructive dialogue. If necessary, gracefully change the subject to something neutral.
  4. Find Common Ground
Focus on what unites you rather than what divides you. Shared memories, common interests, or mutual respect can be great conversation anchors. Highlighting positive connections can help steer conversations away from conflict.
  5. Take Breaks if Needed
It’s okay to step away if you feel overwhelmed. Take a walk, spend some time with the kids, or simply find a quiet space to regroup. Giving yourself a moment to breathe can make a big difference in your ability to handle stressful situations.
  6. Remember the Purpose of Thanksgiving
Ultimately, Thanksgiving is about gratitude and togetherness. Remind yourself of this purpose and strive to foster a loving and inclusive environment. Focus on the joy of being together and the blessings in your life. By approaching Thanksgiving with empathy, clear boundaries, and a focus on the positive, you can navigate tricky interactions and ensure a more enjoyable holiday for everyone.

10 Tips for Coping with Election News and Practicing Self-Care

Feeling overwhelmed by election news? You’re not alone. This election season, it’s natural to feel a range of emotions—anxiety, hope, and for many of us frustration. To help you find balance and stay grounded, here are 10 tips that can help you prioritize your well-being and embrace self-care, especially when news cycles feel endless.

1. Breathe Deeply to Reset Your Nervous System – When anxiety starts to build, try sitting or lying down and taking at least 10 slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold briefly, and exhale gently through your mouth for a count of six. Deep breathing can signal your body to relax, slowing the heart rate and calming the mind.

2. Set Boundaries with News Consumption – Choose specific times of day to check the news and avoid reading updates first thing in the morning or right before bed. If social media and news apps make it hard to resist checking, consider logging out temporarily or even deleting apps to create a bit of distance.

3. Use Meditation to Find Calm in Chaos -Practicing meditation can help quiet the noise, whether it’s 5 minutes of focused breathing or a guided meditation. Apps like Calm, Headspace, or Insight Timer can be helpful if you’re new to meditation. This practice can keep you centered, especially when everything around feels uncertain.

4. Listen to Music That Uplifts or Grounds You Create a playlist with songs that lift your spirits or help you relax. Whether it’s classical, jazz, or your favorite upbeat tunes, music can be a simple yet powerful tool to shift your mood.

5. Show Compassion—To Yourself and Others – Allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling without judgment. Practice kindness, both towards yourself and others. Self-compassion is essential; it reminds you that it’s okay to pause, rest, and take time to process.

6. Stay Active, Stay Hydrated -Physical movement, even a short walk, can work wonders for your mental state. Aim to get outside or do simple exercises indoors. Remember to stay hydrated too—dehydration can impact mood and focus.

7. Seek Nature for a Refreshing Break – Stepping outside to connect with nature can help ground you. Go for a walk and take in the beauty around you, especially during the vibrant fall season. Observe the colors, sounds, and textures; let the experience fill your senses and bring a sense of peace.

8. Keep a Journal to Process and Express Yourself – Writing can be a powerful way to process emotions. Spend a few minutes each day jotting down how you’re feeling, what’s on your mind, and what you’re grateful for. Writing helps you process emotions, which can lighten the weight of stress.

9. Focus on What You Can Control – Accepting what you cannot control can be freeing. Direct your energy toward things you can influence, whether that’s helping a loved one, improving a skill, or taking a small action that aligns with your values.

10. Vote to Empower Yourself – Voting is one of the most tangible ways to impact your community and voice your values. When you vote, you’re taking a stand and shaping the future. Know that your vote matters.

Consider sharing these tips with someone who might benefit from a bit of support. Self-care isn’t just for you; it’s a message of resilience and well-being that can help lift others too. Make this election season an opportunity to practice kindness, gratitude, and connection.

Make this your special self-care week! For more information on how you can cope with election stress and self-care, contact Bela Life Coaching and Hypnotherapy at bela@belacoaching.com, or call 503-939-2269.

Recover Faster with Surgery Coaching

If you or someone you know is struggling with cancer, read my recent client’s testimonial below for some inspiration on how working together supported their journey. Mind-Body Techniques Can Be Powerful Healing Tools

When Karena (not her real name) was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor and faced a very delicate surgery, she was terrified. Her daughter had called to ask if I could work with her weeks before surgery to reduce her mother’s anxiety. Through working with me Karena raised her energetic vibration with the Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster™ protocol, developed by Peggy Huddleston. I not only helped her reduce anxiety with mind-body techniques so that she could visualize her complete healing as if was happening in the present, but also to create a support group of loving friends and family, and had the anesthesiologist say healing statements during the multi-hour surgery. I am happy to say that surgery was successful and she and her family were thrilled.  Here is her testimonial:

The Healing Power of the Mind is Amazing

George (not his real name) was diagnosed with lymphoma in the spring of 2021. I began my mind-body work with him just before his first chemotherapy session.  My work helped him reduce his anxiety by leading him in a workshop devoted to reducing his stress; visualizing his short and long-term healing as of its happening right now; surrounding himself with the love of others; listening to a relaxation recording twice daily; and reading Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster™ by Peggy Huddleston.  He made the wonderful shift from deep stress to peace and positivity. Happily, George has been cancer free for more than two years.

Here is his testimonial:

The Holidays Are Upon Us

It is already December and most of us are busy planning for the holidays. However, as the holidays and the end of the year approach, I’m also certain that many of you are reflecting on the things in your life you might like to change. Another year – or another chapter – of your life is coming to a close. What would you like different in this next, new chapter as you go forward? Do the holidays make you realize you need help with stress management? As you consider the new year before you, do you think you’d like to focus on your health and losing weight? Do you want to better yourself? Are you interested in personal development, or developing your career? These are just a few of the many things that I, as your life coach and hypnotherapist, can help you address in your life. Portland locals, you don’t have to take the first steps into the next chapter of your life on your own. You can seek help.

Dissolving Fear

Many people I’ve talked to lately are filled with fear.  Fear about our divided country struggling with politics, an economic crisis, violence, social and racial injustices, the war in Ukraine and COVID.  It is a lot to deal with. But one thing is certain: We have to learn to live together in love, peace and harmony.

I truly believe that we are on the verge of a new era of enlightenment – and its arrival will be in the not-too-distant future. For now, we all have to remember that we have the opportunity to choose love over fear. Love for ourselves and others.

But how do we combat our fears? One way is to remember that the sun is always shining–even though the clouds may obscure it for a while. Here’s a short writing from Louise Hay about fear that can help:

“As the fears come, I choose to see them as passing clouds in the sky, and I let them go on their way. I am not my fears…I know that what we do in our hearts is very important, so I begin every day in a silent connection with my heart. When I feel afraid, I let the love dissolve the fear.”

If you are having issues with fear, confidence or stress please reach out to me. I give free consultations and offering in-person, Zoom and phone coaching and hypnotherapy sessions on a sliding scale to meet your financial needs.

GIVING YOURSELF PERMISSION TO HAVE MORE FUN

Do you make time to be playful and have fun?

Being playful is easy when we are children, but as we become adults, and go through difficult challenges in our lives, a serious side takes over. Some of us have had difficult, challenging childhoods, while others had wonderful and delightful childhoods. But today, it really doesn’t matter.  Playfulness brings joy, and what better feeling can we bring today than joy within ourselves!

I can’t say that my childhood was an easy one. My parents didn’t get along and unfortunately, things were not light-hearted in my young world. But fortunately, I married someone who is very playful… and that was one of the things that drew me to him. He is a great “fun” role model, and being playful is one of the wonderful things he has taught me.

Here is a portion of a short article, “Playfulness Brings Joy,” written by Madyson Taylor, founder of the Daily OM website:

“When we approach our lives with a spirit of fun and liveliness, our interactions provide us with a satisfying sense of pleasure. Even though it may seem that joking around or playing is not a mature way to be, when we do this, we are aligning ourselves much more closely with our true spirit. This type of energy allows us to be much more aware of each moment and content with how we spend our time with others. Letting yourself play, joke, and laugh unabashedly will fill today with happiness and wonder.”

Bela Life Coaching Can Help You Learn to Have More Fun

Research shows that being playful is a key way to get more out of life. Even though we are busy with everyday responsibilities and schedules, it’s important to make time for play and leisure.

Here are 10 examples I’ve shared with clients for having fun and being playful:

  1. Sing and dance just for the fun of it.
  2. Spend time with the children in your life, observing them as they play, listening to their conversation, and following their train of thought.
  3. Cultivate a happy, joyful, positive attitude, full of gratitude for even the smallest, everyday things.
  4. Plan to make play part of your day, whether it is indoor or outdoor, solo or social, active or quiet.
  5. Try face & finger painting.
  6. Try lip-synching. Turn off the sound on your TV and make up the dialogues yourself.
  7. Watch funny movies.
  8. Watch the moon and stars come out. Say “aaaaaaa” and “oooooo” a lot.
  9. Wear two different colored shoes or socks (dare to be different).
  10. Adopt a pet.

Now it’s your turn. Take out a journal or piece of paper and write about the things you like to do to be playful and have fun… or, write about the things you would like to do to be playful and have fun. Don’t overthink it.
